Post-Convention Self-Care: A Gentle Reset for Geeks After the Magic Ends

Let's spread the geekiness!

If you’re feeling exhausted, emotional, or a little lost after a convention weekend, you’re not alone. Many fans experience “Con Drop” after returning home from an event filled with excitement, creativity, and community. Post-convention self-care is important.

In this post, we’ll cover:

  • recovering from convention fatigue
  • managing post-convention blues
  • cozy gaming and comfort fandoms
  • processing memories and photos
  • reconnecting with everyday routines
  • keeping the joy of the convention alive after the weekend ends

The post isn’t really about cosplay. I want to think more about how we care for ourselves after an intense, joy-filled experience; and how we transition from a meaningful, joy-filled experience back into everyday life.

It’s about:

  • social exhaustion
  • overstimulation
  • physical recovery
  • returning to routine
  • processing joyful experiences
  • making space for rest

So here’s how to honor your energy after a weekend that meant something to you.

While many people choose their new vacation spot every year, convention season is how we plan our time off. For us, our con-season begins in May for MomoCon – our first annual vacation of the year. And then once again in September for DragonCon. Both weekends are exciting events for us – and they’re equally exhausting.

If you’re like us and feel the post-con crash after a comic convention or your latest trip, I want to share some tips for post-convention/post-vacation self-care, with cozy gaming, fandom rituals, and restful tips to help geeks recharge after the con.

Convention Season

If you’re a regular, you are probably aware of the Convention High – that high from being at a convention surrounded by all your people is like nothing else. I’m an introvert and generally hate crowds – but at a convention I feel like I’m home, surrounded by people who get me. My people. Then convention weekend ends and you will inevitably experience that after-con low, or the ‘Con-Drop’ you feel when it’s all over and you have to return to the real world. With all the normies. And cosplay as a person who has their stuff together, right? You can’t wait until the next convention to feel that amazing feeling all over again.

This is how most vacations are.

As great as it all is in the moment, the constant stimulation from being surrounded by other geeks, cosplayers, and fans can be exhausting. This post-con crash is completely normal and it’s okay to feel drained or even sad when the magic ends. That’s why it’s important to focus on self-care after the convention.

The concept of “Con Drop” doesn’t only apply to conventions.

It can happen after a vacation, a holiday season, finishing a favorite book, reaching the end of an anime series, completing a game you’ve been immersed in for months, or coming home from a convention weekend that meant a lot to you.

At its core, it’s the emotional whiplash that happens when something you’ve been anticipating, experiencing, and enjoying suddenly comes to an end.

Why Post-Convention Self-Care Matters for Geeks

Conventions and vacations ask a lot from us. We walk miles and then stay up too late. Then we spend days surrounded by crowds, lights, conversations, excitement, and creativity.

Even when every moment is wonderful, that’s still a lot for a body and mind to process. Which is why the days after a convention deserve just as much care as the days leading up to it. Recovery isn’t about “getting back to normal” as quickly as possible. It’s about giving yourself space to enjoy the memories while gently finding your way back to everyday life.

Gentle Ways to Recharge After a Convention

Rest First, Unpack Later

One of the hardest parts of returning home from a convention is feeling like you should immediately jump back into real life. There are suitcases to unpack, costumes to hang up, photos to sort, and a hundred little things waiting for your attention.

But before any of that, rest.

Conventions ask a lot from us. We spend days walking, socializing, creating, carrying bags, standing in lines, and soaking in constant excitement. Even when every moment is wonderful, it still takes energy.

If you’re heading back to work the next morning, give yourself permission to do the bare minimum. Drink some water. Stretch a little. Hang up anything that needs immediate attention, then let the rest wait until tomorrow.

And if you’ve managed to carve out an extra recovery day after the convention? Even better. Take a nap. Sleep in. Curl up under a blanket and watch comfort shows. Spend a quiet afternoon doing absolutely nothing productive.

The convention is over. You don’t have to earn your rest. Sometimes the best post-convention self-care is simply giving yourself permission to be still for a little while.

Return to a Comfort Game

After a convention weekend filled with crowds, schedules, excitement, and constant stimulation, I often find myself craving something familiar.

That’s usually where cozy games come in. Whether it’s tending a farm, decorating a tiny space, organizing a backpack, or simply wandering through a peaceful world, cozy games offer something conventions don’t always allow much room for: stillness. You don’t need to complete quests, optimize anything, or chase achievements. This is one of those rare moments where “just vibing” is a perfectly acceptable strategy.

Games like Coral Island, Animal Crossing, Spiritfarer, Unpacking, Tiny Glade, or any other comfort favorite can provide a gentle transition back into everyday life. They give your brain something enjoyable to focus on while asking very little in return.

And if you attended a gaming convention, this can be a wonderful time to revisit a demo you discovered or finally try that indie game you couldn’t stop thinking about all weekend.

Sometimes a little farming, decorating, building, or exploring is exactly what the post-convention soul needs.

Revisit the Stories That Inspired You

One of my favorite parts of any convention is discovering something new.

Every year, I come home from Convention with a growing list of anime, games, books, artists, and recommendations I want to explore. Often it’s a cosplay that catches my eye. Sometimes it’s a panel discussion. And most times it’s simply hearing someone talk passionately about a series I’ve never considered before.

The week after a convention can be the perfect time to follow those threads of curiosity. Maybe that means finally starting the anime everyone was talking about. Maybe it means watching a movie you missed while preparing for the convention. Or maybe it’s returning to an old comfort favorite that always feels like coming home. (A slice-of-life anime marathon with snacks and a cozy blanket has never once let me down.)

And if your attention span is feeling a little tired after a busy weekend, that’s okay too. This can be a wonderful time to pick up the novel, manga, or comic you set aside during convention prep. Audiobooks are also a lovely option when you want the comfort of a story without asking quite so much of yourself.

Conventions often remind us why we love these stories in the first place. Spending a little quiet time with them afterward can help keep that feeling alive long after the weekend is over.

Unpack Your Treasures Slowly

One of my favorite post-convention rituals is unpacking everything I brought home. Not because I’m eager to organize it all immediately, but because it gives me a chance to relive the weekend one more time.

Maybe it’s a new art print from an artist whose work stopped you in your tracks. Or a signed collectible that reminds you of a conversation with a favorite voice actor. Maybe it’s a small souvenir that made you smile when you saw it in Artist Alley. As I find places for new pieces on my shelves and walls, I get to revisit those moments all over again.

For me, this has become a form of self-care. Not a task to rush through, but a quiet ritual that helps me transition back home. Sometimes I’ll put on a favorite playlist, make a cup of tea, and spend an hour rearranging shelves or finding the perfect place for a new print.

The convention may be over, but the memories don’t have to disappear the moment you walk through the front door. Sometimes displaying a new piece of art or adding a collectible to a shelf is a way of carrying a little bit of that joy forward into everyday life.

Revisit the Weekend

One of the quiet joys of coming home from a convention is getting to revisit it all again.

A day or two after the excitement settles, pour yourself a cup of tea and scroll through your photos. You might discover a cosplay detail you missed, a candid moment that makes you smile, or a photo with friends that instantly transports you back to the convention floor. If you’re someone who enjoys documenting memories, this can also be a wonderful time to create a small convention scrapbook—digital or physical. Save a few favorite photos, ticket stubs, badges, stickers, or notes about the weekend while everything is still fresh in your mind.

You don’t have to turn every convention into content. Sometimes it’s enough to simply preserve the memories for yourself. Years from now, you’ll be grateful you captured those moments, the same way we treasure old travel photos, journals, and sketchbooks. Conventions come and go, but the stories we collect along the way are worth keeping.

Keep the Connections That Matter

One of the best parts of a convention is the reminder that we’re not the only ones who love the things we love.

Whether you spent the weekend with friends, discovered a new artist, chatted with a fellow fan in a panel line, or met a creator whose work inspired you, conventions have a way of creating small moments of connection. And sometimes it’s nice to carry a few of those connections home with you.

That doesn’t mean you need to jump into every Discord server or suddenly become active in every fandom community. In fact, if you’re feeling socially exhausted, the kindest thing you can do might be to step away from the internet for a day or two. But if someone made your weekend a little brighter, consider sending a quick thank-you message. Follow that artist whose work you loved. Sign up for the newsletter you meant to subscribe to while standing in Artist Alley. Reach out to the friend you spent the weekend laughing with.

Not because you have to stay connected to everyone. Just because some connections are worth keeping. And sometimes a simple message that says, “It was great meeting you,” is enough.

Keep a Little of the Magic

One of the things I love most about conventions is that they remind me of the parts of myself that light up. The excitement of discovering a new story. The joy of meeting fellow fans. The creativity that comes from being surrounded by people who love what they love without apology.

And while the convention itself eventually ends, that feeling doesn’t have to. Maybe it’s displaying your convention badge on a shelf, or framing a new art print. You might want to finally use the mug you bought instead of saving it for a special occasion; or wear the fandom shirt you couldn’t stop thinking about. It could simply be following an artist whose work inspired you and carrying that inspiration into your own creative life.

The goal isn’t to recreate the convention every day, it’s to keep a small piece of what made it meaningful. Sometimes the best souvenirs aren’t the things we bring home. They’re the ideas, stories, and sparks of inspiration that stay with us long after the weekend is over.

Final Thoughts: Let the Convention End Gently

Conventions are wonderful because they pull us out of our routines for a little while.

For a few days, we’re surrounded by creativity, excitement, fandom, and people who understand exactly why we care so deeply about the stories we love. Then the weekend ends, the badges come off, and real life quietly returns. That transition can feel surprisingly emotional. And if you’ve ever felt a little sad, tired, uninspired, or disconnected after a convention, you’re not alone. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It simply means the experience mattered. So give yourself permission to slow down.

Rest when you need rest. Revisit the stories that inspired you. Enjoy your new treasures. Keep the connections that matter. And most importantly, remember that you don’t have to leave the joy behind when the convention is over. Honor the joy you felt at the convention while giving yourself permission to slow down. It is absolutely okay to miss the con. It means it mattered.

You can carry a little of it into everyday life. Because the goal was never to live at the convention forever. The goal was to return home inspired. And if you’re already counting down the days until your next convention, well… I completely understand.

May your post-convention recovery be cozy, your inspiration last a little longer, and your convention bag finally get unpacked.

Eventually.
