As a geeky introvert who has made a grand effort to create a geeky safe space to call home, it’s hard to have people I don’t know over. It’s like allowing the unknown into my home. Who are you? What do you like? What if you hate everything I love? Now you’re in my space and we’re both uncomfortable.

I’ve spent so much of my life trying to fit in and not really being myself that I have completely lost interest in all pretense. So whenever someone wants to come over who doesn’t understand the way of the geek I get a bit of anxiety at having to entertain in my safe space while not completely being myself.

Does anyone feel the same way? How do you entertain when you don’t know someone in your party?

Post-Convention Self-Care for Geeks : From Cosplay to Couch

Let's spread the geekiness!

Convention season is starting! Well, for us our con-season begins in May for MomoCon – our first annual vacation of the year. We just finished up the con and we are so excited about our weekend… and exhausted. Are you like us and feeling the post-con crash after MomoCon or your latest geeky adventure? Here’s your ultimate guide to post-convention self-care, with cozy gaming, fandom rituals, and restful tips to help geeks recharge after the con.

Convention Season

Many of us are getting started with our annual convention prep, whether we’re cosplayers, collectors, merchants, fans, or geeks. If you’re a regular, you are probably aware of the Convention High – you know, the high from being at a convention surrounded by all your people is like nothing else. I’m an introvert and generally hate crowds – but at a convention I feel like I’m home, surrounded by people who get me. My people. Then convention weekend ends and you will inevitably experience that after-con low, or the ‘Con-Drop’ you feel when it’s all over and you have to return to the real world. With all the normies. And cosplay as a person who has their stuff together, right? You can’t wait until the next convention to feel that amazing feeling all over again.

As great as it all is in the moment, the constant stimulation from being surrounded by other geeks, cosplayers, and fans can be exhausting. This post-con crash is completely normal and it’s okay to feel drained or even sad when the magic ends. It’s important to focus on self-care after the convention. In this short post, I want to give you some after-con-self-care tips so you can jump back into your real life without carrying that exhaustion with you.

Why Self-Care Matters for Geeks

As geeks who are often introverts, creatives, and highly stimulated individuals, cons can be physically and emotionally overwhelming — even when they’re amazing. So a little self-care can help reset your energy, re-center your mind, and gently reintroduce you to the “real world.” In a previous post (Self-Care for Geeks), I shared some steps for creating the perfect routine for the geek. “Self-care for geeks is really just a self-care routine. But a geeky self care routine involves activities that only a geek would appreciate, and that can enrich a geeky person’s life experience. As a result, this makes for a much more fulfilling self-care experience.”

Remember: taking care of your geeky soul isn’t selfish — it’s essential.

Post-Convention Self-Care Ideas for Geeks and Fans

Power Down: Rest and Recharge

Many of you have to return to work the day after the convention, so that leaves little time for a day to relax. If that’s the case for you, unpack your car, hang your costumes if you have them, and just go to bed. Rest. Let the unpacking be a concern for tomorrow’s you. Rehydrate, stretch, and give your body some love.

If you took that extra day off or are self-employed, or a student, and you can have the day after con to rest, then use that day to rest and do nothing. Seriously, embrace the nap and your sleep. You’ve earned it. You cosplayed your heart out. Now it’s time to cosplay as a cozy burrito. Take a day to do nothing. No productivity required.

Cozy Gaming for the Post-Convention Self-Care Soul

Try a low-stress, cozy game like Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, Spiritfarer, Unpacking, or Palia. Really, any cozy game will do, as long as it provides comfort, routine, and lets you just vibe without adrenaline.

I mean it – just farm, craft, and build for an hour or two. If your convention was a gaming convention, try out some of the indie game demos you saw and turn your brain off.

The Great Post-Con Re-Watch

Every year, MomoCon cosplayers and merchants expose me to new anime or series I want to watch. If you’re lucky enough to attend a bigger con, like SanDiego Comic Con, you probably got to see announcements for new shows and games before the rest of us. After the convention, catch up on anime, shows, or geeky movies you found out about during the convention, or any you may have missed while prepping for the con. Or rewatch a comfort favorite (Lord of the Rings marathon, anyone?) with a plushie and snacks.

Of course, you can also finish that fantasy novel, manga, or comic you put down to pack for convention. Don’t want to use your eyes? Try an audiobook while you sit back and relax.

Here are some of the more popular fandoms we saw during MomoCon this year (2025):

  • Frieren
  • One Piece
  • My Hero Academia
  • Sonic
  • X-Men ‘97
  • Arcane

And don’t worry, I have another anime watch list coming really soon!

Organize Your Post-Convention Loot

I scored big this year! I usually don’t expect to purchase much fine art at MomoCon and save my art-coins for the Fine Art area of DragonCon. We love collecting art from our favorite artists, whether it’s fanart or wonderfully creative art we wouldn’t find anywhere else. But this year, I came home with an All Might oil painting that took my breath away, and on of Obi Wan and Darth Vader by the same artist.

I was also able to have three Funko Pops signed by the voice actors – All Might, Zoro, and Usopp. Overjoyed barely describes the feeling.

Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to figure out where I was going to place my new loot. For me, this is self-care. So make organizing your con haul (merch, pins, posters, prints, cosplay accessories) into a fun ritual. You can make room on your bookshelf, put up new shelves, create a shadowbox of badges, label your pins, and find room on your wall to display your new fandom art.

Relive the Magic Digitally After Convention

Grab some tea, cuddle up on your couch or bed, and go through photos, edit or organize your cosplay shots, and maybe post a highlight reel or photo dump on social. Better yet, make a “Con Scrapbook” digitally or physically — with ticket stubs, stickers, and selfies.

Stay Connected After Convention

Follow this tip with your boundaries in mind. While an introvert may want to disconnect and speak to no-one at all for days after the convention, some people will still benefit from that after-con contact to keep their social battery charged.

By people I mean extroverts. They never stop lol.

So I mean this in the most low-key-social-interaction way possible:

Join or re-engage with online communities related to your favorite fandoms or artists you met. This is a good time to sign up for that artist’s newsletter, or join a fan group online.

Even better, drop a thank-you message or shoutout to someone who made your con special — a vendor, a cosplayer, or a friend.

More Geeky Post-Convention Self-Care Ideas

Try relaxing to fandom-themed face masks, bath bombs, candles, or teas. Stores like Lush, Ulta, Sephora, and BoxLunch often collaborate with fandoms we love. You can also search Etsy for small businesses that specialize in fandom-filled goodies.

Geeky journals, tarot decks, or even mindfulness apps that match fandoms (e.g. Headspace for Jedi Mindfulness vibes) are a great way to decompress and relax. Love tarot? Me too! Look for creative fandom-themed decks at 2nd & Charles.

Listen to some of your favorite playlists and soundtracks on Spotify. Love creating your own playlists? Create a “Post-Con Chill” playlist featuring lo-fi game soundtracks or ambient fantasy tunes. If you do, please share it with me!

Take Care of Yourself After the Convention

I hope I’ve given you some ideas and encouragement to slow down after your next convention. Honor the joy you felt at the convention while giving yourself permission to slow down. It is absolutely okay to miss the con. It means it mattered.

Your turn! Share your own post-con rituals or favorite self-care practices in the comments below or on social media. And don’t forget to share this pin 🙂
