How to Clean Your Geek Collectibles

Let's spread the geekiness!

We’ve all been there: You walk past your display shelf, admiring your prized collectibles… and then gasp!—you spot it. A fine layer of dust on your mint-condition Funko Pop, or worse, your autographed comic has yellowed around the edges.

I just died a little inside even typing that!

Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting your geek shrine, proper care and maintenance is key to keeping your treasures looking epic. TLDR: Clean your geek collectibles!

Spoiler Alert: If you missed it, check out the last post in the series on How to Display Your Geek Collection. There’s a freebie in there, too!

Why Clean Collections Matter

Sure, your figures look amazing on your shelf—but caring for them is more than skin deep. Here’s why it’s worth your time:

Always display-ready: Dust and grime ruin the vibe (and your aesthetic). Your guests will likely be much more impressed with a pristine collection rather than grimy objects that look like they’ve been stuck in a warehouse for years. And if you have a private collection, being able to see your collectibles in a nice clean environment will make you happy.

Preserve the value: If you ever plan to resell or get your items appraised, condition is everything. No one wants to buy a dirty collectible.

Extend the lifespan: Protecting your precious from damage helps your collection go the distance. This starts with your choice of display and continues on through how you maintain it all.

General Care Tips for Clean Collectibles

*(These tips apply to almost everything!)*

  • Avoid direct sunlight. UV rays fade prints, plastics, and ink over time.
  • Control moisture. Humidity is the enemy, so store your collectibles in cool, dry spaces.
  • Use the proper tools: Microfiber cloths for dusting; canned air for tight spots; and archival-safe materials for paper goods are just a few examples.

Cleaning Tips by Item Type

Okay, so now let’s get into the actual tips for this blog post. This will be a pretty straightforward list, which will make this week’s post a bit shorter. But don’t worry, less words never mean less content when you’re here. Stay until the end for your free printable checklist that you can use for your bullet journal or use as an online spreadsheet to keep your collectible cleaning schedule on track.

Or, if you’re impatient like me, you can download it now so you don’t forget!

Figures (Funko Pops, Action Figures, Statues)

  • Use a microfiber cloth weekly.
  • Q-tips are great for fine details.
  • Compressed air works like a charm for small joints and nooks.

Comic Books

  • Always handle them with clean hands or gloves.
  • Store in acid-free bags and boards, and upright in a cool, dark space.
  • Avoid stacking heavy items on top of your books.

Books (Collector Editions, Manga, etc.)

  • Store them upright, and take care not to pack them too tightly.
  • Avoid bending the spines when reading!
  • Keep your books away from damp areas or sunlit windows.

Art Prints & Posters

  • Frame your prints and posters using UV-resistant glass or acrylic.
  • Acid-free mats/backing are a perfect way to prevent discoloration.
  • Keep them away from moisture-prone areas (like bathrooms).

Electronics (Retro Consoles, Handhelds)

  • Unplug them when not in use or keep them plugged in to a surge protector.
  • Dust all electronics regularly with a dry cloth.
  • Keep them away from heat sources and store your cords properly.

Storage Advice for Clean Geek Collectibles

I can completely understand not having enough space for all your collectibles, or simply wanting to keep them stored for reasons you don’t have to explain. They’re your collections – I’m just here to help you maintain and care for them! 🙂 So here is some storage advice for those of you who need and want to keep your geeky items of value stored away:

For Collectible Box-Keepers

  • Flatten and store original boxes in large, dry bins.
  • Label each one with the item name and its condition.

Tips For Investors

  • Mint condition means your items are at their highest value (see the collections tracker for terms and definitions for the value of your items).
  • Double-boxing and climate-controlled storage is key.

For Everyone Else

  • Keep your collectible displays out of reach from pets, sticky kid hands, and windows. You may see precious collectibles, but kids see toys.
  • Rotate your items occasionally to reduce wear from light or dust (see the How to Display Your Collections post for more tips on where and why to put your items).

Okay, now it’s FREEBIE TIME! This week I’ve created a Geek Collection Upkeep Checklist for you to track your cleaning schedule for all your precious(es).
