16 Jun How To Display Your Geek Collection
What’s in this Post
So you’ve got your geek collection growing and you’ve started tracking it all (high five!). Now comes the exciting part — showing off those treasures in style! Whether you’ve got a handful of Funko Pops or an entire wall of comic books, displaying your collection can make your fandom feel alive and turn your space into your personal geek sanctuary.
In this post we’ll talk about all the different ways to display your collections. I’ll share my own collection setup, my favorite display gear, and tips to keep everything looking sharp — plus ideas for every budget and space size. I also prepared a Geek Collector’s Display Guide ebook for you to plan out your dream collection display. This one was a doozy! So are you ready to turn your collection into a geek home decor masterpiece? Let’s do this, geeks!
The Problem with Fandom Collections
I’m not sure if you’ve reached this point yet, but there comes a time in every geek’s life when the collectibles start taking over. First, it’s one or two adorable figures in your bedroom. Then, it’s a shelf in your living room. Then suddenly… your dining table is a cosplay and LEGO build parts graveyard, and you’re explaining to guests why there’s a lightsaber in the bathroom.
We’ve all been there, right?
Right?
Once we started collecting seriously, our shelves went from empty to overflowing — and I realized we needed a way to display everything that wouldn’t make our home look like a toy store exploded.

How to Display Your Geek Collections
So how do you take a geek collection stash and turn it into a Pinterest-worthy display with glorious purpose? You know, instead of a chaotic pile of fandom loot? Don’t worry, whether you’ve got one shelf or an entire fandom room, there’s a way to make your collection shine. So let’s talk space planning, gear, lighting, and maintenance. And yes, I have a free printable guide to help you turn your collection into a shrine of geek goodness.
You can follow along with my free Geek Collection Display Guide, which you can grab [here] to help you plan your ultimate geek display!
Evaluate Your Space and Know Your Style

Okay, stop! Before you grab those keys (or keyboard) and head to Ikea (one of my favorite spots for organization loot), take a moment or three to size up your space. There are some things you need to figure out before adding all the shelving and display cases to your cart. You need to first ask yourself a few questions:
- How much room do you have?
- Are you working with a dedicated shelf, a wall, or just a tiny corner?
- Do you want your collection to blend with your home decor or scream “LOOK AT MY AWESOME GEEKINESS!”?
Before you buy anything, get a feel for your space and what style you want. For instance, hubs and I love our industrial-geek-chic decor style and have stuck to certain materials and a color palette when decorating downstairs. Metals, medium wood, and cozy textures for seating, along with metallic greys, rust, and green when we have pops of color. This means we don’t toss really colorful Funko POPs or wall art.
If you’re curious about how we match our Funko figures to our color palette for geeky seasonal decor, see this post. But finish this one, first!
Now let’s focus on your collection and your space. Try not to jump in with both feet and your eyes closed. Take your time and think through how you want your collection to look. Also consider your budget. You can start with what you have at first. You don’t need a dedicated collector’s cave or an entire basement – simply look around and do a mental check:
Space check
Do you have an empty wall, bookshelf, or corner? Measure shelf lengths, wall space, or desk areas. Use painter’s tape to mark where shelves or cases could go. Also consider whether pets, kids, or curious guests could potentially knock things over. All it takes is one time and one broken collector’s item for you to decide to never have kids over again.
True story, not enough time lol.
Style check
Are you into clean minimalist vibes? An eclectic flair? Cozy geek cottage clutter? Ultra geek-chic? A pop-culture shrine? Knowing your style helps you pick display gear that fits your home and your heart. So what’s your home decor style? Don’t worry if you don’t have one yet – we can still make your collection display feel right at home. And stick around because we will have a series on geeking up your home decor and figuring out your decor style, soon.

Lighting check
Is there natural light hitting that space? Natural light is lovely but can fade your comics and prized collectibles. Think about adding LED strip lights or desk lamps for a little spotlight magic.
Pro-Tip
Use painter’s tape to mark potential shelf spots and sizes on your wall to help you visualize your space. It may also help to sketch out your ideas on the Collection Display Printable you downloaded (hint, hint).
Choose Your Own Display Adventure
This is the fun part – although not as fun as setting it all up at the end! Display gear is where function meets fandom flair (how’s that for geeky poetry?). Here are some of the options I personally love for displaying my precious(es) and will hopefully make your space work for you:

Display and Book Cases
Adjustable bookcases are great for your comics, art books, and larger collectibles. Adjustable shelves mean flexibility as your collection grows. Glass-front display cases are ideal for keeping dust out while still showing off your prized pops, action figures, or fragile items. Some even come with built-in lighting!
We found the most awesome glass-door bookcases at Ikea in a unique grey color to match our bedroom furniture. This is where our comic books live, dust-free, and looking much more expensive than they were. I use acrylic magazine holders to help keep comics organized by character and universe. And I have thrown in some POPs on clear acrylic stands to help those smaller items pop in layers.
Shelves
Cube shelves, ladder shelves, and floating shelves are collector staples. They fit everything from boxed Funkos to stacked manga volumes. Floating shelves look like magic, but aesthetically speaking, these sleek, wall-mounted beauties are perfect for your Funko Pops, graphic novels, or small collectibles — and they don’t take up floor space which is even better!
Bonus: You can style shelves for aesthetics and organization by mixing and matching collection items to fit a genre, character, or theme.
Wall-Mounted Options
Wall grids or pegboards are perfect for hanging pins, keychains, or lightweight swag. Plus, they add a cool industrial or crafty vibe to your space. Pegboards, grid panels, and wall hooks are especially genius for displaying keychains, pins, and lightweight items in a visually fun layout. Shadow boxes are something I never thought about until Michaels was having a sale. Think framed 3D displays! They are great for cosplay accessories, pins, or signed memorabilia.

Keep your Collection ‘Lit’
Are the kids still using that word?
Either way, in this case good lighting can turn your collection from “nice” to “wow!” Even better, if you combine some of the lighting options below, you’ll have a cool museum collector vibe. Add some ambience and highlight your key pieces with:
LED light strips (color-changing, motion-sensor) for whatever vibe you want your collection to convey.
Puck lights, or clip-on spotlights to highlight your favorite pieces. Targeted spotlighting can draw the eye to whatever you want to showcase. Especially in glass cases or bookshelves.
Consider battery-operated lights if plugs are scarce.
Avoid direct sunlight to keep your colors vibrant and prevent damage. It fades prints, comics, and paint on figures, and your figures deserve better!

Keep in mind that warm white lights give off a more cozy vibe. And cool white lights tend to be clean and modern. Of course, you can use whatever lighting you’re drawn to and whatever matches your geek energy! While I love feeling cozy while playing games – we want our home to give off a more sleek and semi-modern industrial vibe while still being comfortable. So we replaced all the yellow – I mean ‘warm’ – bulbs with daylight bulbs for a brighter, cleaner look.

Organize with Intention
There are so many organization ‘guru’s’ who will tell you that there is only one way to organize and it’s their way. While I’d love to hire someone to come in and organize my mess of sewing sh-tuff (heehee), I disagree with the thought that you can only be organized one certain way.
Spoiler alert: There is no “right” way to organize. Organization is all about what makes sense to you and your space. It’s about prioritizing the things you want to show or shine, and it’s ultimately about what makes you happy. The key to organization is creating or figuring out a system that works for you, which is a personal decision. And it should be because your collection is personal to you. The goal of having an organized collection is to first make your collection a joy for you to look at. Once you’re happy with how it looks, it will then become a conversation starter.
Here are some suggestions to inspire you to think about how you might want to organize and arrange your geek collection:
Group by fandom
All your Marvel stuff in one place? Yes, please. Star Wars shrine? Absolutely.
Organize by item type
All Funko Pops on one shelf, comics on another. Books with books. Pins with pins. Plushies on every other surface in the house.
Color coordinate for visual impact
This one is for the aesthetic collectors. Ever thought about rainbow-order for your Pops? That could be both satisfying and stunning.
Group by story or theme
You could arrange characters in their saga timeline. Or create a “Villains Only” shelf.
Wait – I think I might use that idea… Villains…
But you don’t have to have a specific arrangement – especially if you only collect figures from a certain anime or movie. Or even if you don’t. You could just go rogue and mix everything for a fun eclectic look!

[I’ll be sharing photos of my own displays soon, so join the Geek Life Discord for some shelfie inspo!]
Keep Your Collectibles Clean
And speaking of villains – dust is definitely the enemy of any collection! It sneaks in when you least expect it, and spreads its corruption over every surface. It’s important to keep your babies clean. Use microfiber cloths to dust shelves and cases regularly. Keep glass doors closed when you can. Keep your displays away from damp humid spots like the bathroom. Maybe even rotate what’s on display to give each piece some spotlight time and avoid any fading or self-denting. And if you collect in-box, try to avoid stacking your boxes too high because they will warp.
We love a good shelfie — but dusty Vader is not the vibe so maintenance is a must.
And don’t worry – I have a whole post on keeping your collections clean coming next in the Geek Collectors’ Series! I bet there will even be a printable maintenance checklist, too…
Until then, keep things clean and organized with this week’s printable Geek Collection Display Guide. It has a full checklist to get you started 😉
Make Your Collection Personal
This is your collection, so add touches of your personality to make it unique and fun! It’s still a work in progress, but we’ve gotten our space to the point where we can look around and love everything we see. I want that for you! Your space should make you smile every time you walk past it.
Here are some ways to make your display uniquely yours:
- Add framed fan art or cosplay photos
- Find themed bookends or coasters (which could become a separate collection on its own)
- Find geeky plants or quirky figurines that complement your main collection
- A custom nameplate (like “The Geekery of [Your Name]”)
- LED signs, fandom-themed decor, or themed wallpapers for an accent or feature wall.
Remember, this is your collector’s shrine to your favorite fandom(s) — make it fun, cozy, and unmistakably you.
