6 Trendy Fandom-Inspired Halloween Costumes

Let's spread the geekiness!

Trendy Halloween Costumes, But Make It Low-Key Geek

I’ve always thought that Halloween was the entry point for cosplay. I mean, some people really go all out with their costumes every year; and more and more people are finding creative ways to wear their Halloween costumes. Even if it’s just once a year, it’s still costume play, and if you’re enjoying the process and having fun then you definitely understood the assignment. But what if you didn’t have to just wear your fandom once a year? Let’s talk about trendy Halloween costumes and how to create a look that is both geek-chic and totally appropriate for Halloween!

The great thing about costumes – whether for Halloween or a casual day at the convention – is that they don’t have to be complicated. Not everyone wants to do full-on cosplay — especially when you’re heading to work, a friend’s party, or just running errands while secretly channeling your favorite character. You don’t have to go all-in with fake blood and gore for a costume if you don’t want to.

And honestly? That’s kind of the magic of fandom fashion.

There’s something fun (and empowering) about dressing up without technically dressing up. It’s that subtle sweet spot where geek meets chic, and your everyday style gets just the right touch of fandom flair.

So whether you’re headed to a Halloween get-together, want to participate in your office costume contest, or just want to feel a little witchier than usual on your grocery run — here are easy, stylish, fandom-inspired outfit ideas that aren’t costumes… but still totally count.

What Counts as Trendy Halloween Costumes?

We’re talking about looks that are:

  • Made from things already in your closet
  • Focused on inspired-by fashion and current trends, not full costumes
  • Comfortable, wearable, and Instagrammable
  • Easy to add or remove themed elements
  • Chic and geeky — elevated fandom fashion, not high school spirit week

While I am a huge supporter of closet cosplay – especially for the beginner or costume-curious – the outfits in this post are more along the lines of fashion that gives a subtle nod to our favorite fandoms and characters in a subtle way. This is the epitome of “if you know, you know.” So no franchise graphic tees or character likenesses plastered all over your pieces.

Besides being more sustainable – these trendy Halloween costumes – I mean outfit – ideas can double as day-to-day outfits after Halloween. In fact, you can reinvent your closet to reflect both your clothing personality and your favorite characters and fandoms – all without going full-on foam and fabric. You just swap a couple pieces and boom — instant capsule closet for the win.

Cos-Fit is the new Closet Cosplay. Maybe.

So instead of “closet cosplay”, for this post let’s go with Cos-Fit. I combined costume and outfit, with an emphasis on outfit. You can wear these anywhere, and keep in mind that what we’re going for here is “if you know, you know.”

If you are interested in closet cosplay and more obvious fan-fashion, I have an older post that explains how to create costumes from your closet. You can check that out here. In a couple weeks, I’ll be updating the concept of closet cosplay and helping you create your very own fall capsule closet to fit your geek lifestyle. It’ll be subtle and everything you didn’t even know you needed. lol I hope. So stay tuned for that, and sign up here to get notified when that post is out and to get the freebies that come with it.

Easy Trendy Halloween Costume Ideas (That Are Also Geek Chic Fandom Fashion)

Okay, so here are some curated character-inspired outfit ideas you can recreate with what you already own — or pick up affordably without ever stepping foot into a costume shop. This works especially for those last-minute costume ideas and will hopefully get your creative mind going with ideas for your own geek-chic costume. Feel free to use these ideas if you can’t quite come up with your own, though. We don’t gatekeep here!

Oh, and the pieces used for these cos-fits were chosen according to the trends for this year (2025). That’s right! I read through the trends so you don’t have to, and broke each one down for you – it’s like two posts in one!

Of course, I don’t believe that personal style ever needs to be “on trend”, but that’s another topic for another post!

Morticia Addams, But Make It Modern-Goth-Glam

Morticia Addams Fandom Inspired Costume, This Geek Life Blog

Like Morticia, this outfit is chic, moody, and confident — the goth glam icon we all aspire to be.

Look Ingredients:

  • Long slip dress (any cut — make sure you’re comfortable!)
  • Red lipstick and accessories
  • Statement earrings and dark nails
  • Bonus: a goth-inspired handbag

Trending:

  • Satin slip dresses (for ‘lingerie dressing’)
  • Pops of red and red patent leather shoes

You can elevate it with heels, or cozy it down with boots and a leather jacket.

Every year there are trends that cover entire genres, or simply pieces that are trending. The star of this cosfit inspiration is the slip dress. The slip dress is a trending staple for 2025, specifically those that are satin with lace detail. With a bit of layering and intentional accessorizing, you can wear this for various occasions, formal or casual. Layering is key, and highly encouraged.

It’s a modern take on goth fashion, and I chose to pair it with a bell-sleeve lace bolero-style jacket to match the elegant lines of Morticia’s look. Her love for roses, particularly the thorns, is shown here with a rose heart necklace in red. Also matching her red lips, you can pair this outfit with your choice of red accessories – I chose red gem dangle earrings with bats, and black press on stiletto nails with a red underside. A lace bat handbag and red platform mary janes complete this elegant goth look.

Hermione Granger, Modern Prep

Hermione Granger Fandom Inspired Costume, This Geek Life Blog

Here, we’re going for a brainy, cozy, magical academia aesthetic.

Look Ingredients:

  • Plaid skirt or trousers
  • Graphic tee (subtle, of course)
  • Knee-high socks or oxfords
  • Optional: Loungefly bag for a more obvious nod to the fandom

Trending:

  • Plaid
  • Preppy outwear and scholarly-inspired looks
  • Knee-high socks

This is peak dark academia meets light wizardry and works even post-Halloween.

Modern Prep is trending this year, so I went all in with this scholarly-inspired subtle magical look to match Hermione’s character. I took certain elements and combined them to create this more cozy version of the edgier preppy trend. For instance, instead of an oversized blazer, I chose a cropped cardigan and paired it with a graphic tee. I just felt like a blazer was more teacher, and the cardigan is more scholarly-student (think ‘spends all day in the library’).The owl is the small nod here, and the book earrings are my favorite unexpected find. Since knee high socks are in, I went with that, as well as a messenger bag. Statement bags are also in as part of this overall trend, so you can always switch the messenger bag out for a Loungefly bag as a more obvious option.

Miles Morales, Street Style Edition

Miles Morales Fandom Inspired Costume, This Geek Life Blog

Let’s try for comfortable and bold with this look.

Look Ingredients:

  • Black bomber jacket
  • Red oversized button down shirt
  • Slip on sneaker mules in red
  • Optional: Web-slinging hand pose in selfies are encouraged

Trending:

  • Shirting (oversized button down shirts)
  • Bomber jackets
  • Flat slip-on mules
  • Pops of red
  • Tote bags
  • Brooches

You’ll look amazing, feel comfy, and subtly cosplay one of the coolest characters around.

Miles is everything. I combined three trending pieces for this cos-fit, rather than working with an entire trend category. Bomber jackets, oversized button-down shirts (referred to as ‘shirting’ in the fashion world), brooches, slip-on mules, and tote bags are all in this year. So I combined them into a casual streetwear look perfect for work, class, or just slinging around your city.

Brooches can be awkward for me, and a bit heavy on your thinner clothing pieces. So if you’re rather, find some spider earrings or a ring to accessorize.

Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service, Nomadic Boho Style

Kiki Fandom Inspired Costume, This Geek Life Blog

This look is perfect for cozy fall days and Studio Ghibli fans.

Look Ingredients:

  • Layered navy pieces that lean towards flowy, oversized, and comfy.
  • Red scarf or bow earrings
  • Brown slouchy bag and red wallet or wristlet
  • Optional: broom earrings and black cat jewelry

Trending:

  • Nomadic Spirit (bohemian-inspired look and pieces)
  • Red patent leather shoes and pops of red
  • Scarves
  • Pendant Necklaces
  • Tassels

Great for a low-key Halloween party or an actual bakery run. Mmmm, bread.

Studio Ghibli makes some of the coziest down-to-earth anime, so I wanted this look to be just as comfy as Kiki. As she heads out on her journey to independence and adulthood, I find the bohemian-inspired nomadic spirit trend to be most appropriate for this look. So I layered all the things. You’ll see a maxi tiered skirt, peasant top, and vest – all in blue – with pops of red as a nod to her huge bow headtie. It’s giving cozy boho all day.

If you don’t care for the huge bow, however, choose between more sensible but cute dangly bow earrings or a red scarf to wear instead. The broom earrings work as well and give a slightly more obvious nod to the character. Comfy platform leather red flats and a red wristlet wallet are all fine for that pop of red. A brown slouchy hobo tote bag gives a nod to her messenger bag, and black cat jewelry completes the look.

Jack Skellington, Elegantly Spooky

Jack Skellington Fandom Inspired Costume, This Geek Life Blog

It’s like corporate chaos with a hint of spooky elegance.

Look Ingredients:

  • Pinstripe skinny flares with a matching bell-sleeved top
  • Stick to black and white
  • Elegant fandom-inspired jewelry as a nod to the Pumpkin King
  • Add a unique tote with a hand-drawn design

Trending:

  • Tote Bags
  • Turtlenecks
  • Skinny Flares
  • Lace

It’s both stylish and subtle enough for work, and clever enough for geeks to get it.

But it’s also bold in its simplicity. There is only a nod to the uptown punk fashion trend that barely mixes rebellion with workwear. So you should have elements like studs and leather playing nicely with tailored vests and more traditional pieces. This look is more tailored, but you can add more rebel if you want.

I went with a slightly edgy professional look for a character who exudes a spooky confidence and curiosity. And what’s more confident than pinstripes? Add a few studs in your shoes or bag, some elegant jewelry and you’re good.

Sally, A Little Offbeat, But Beautifully Creative

Sally light pink Fandom Inspired Lookbook, This Geek Life Blog

She’s romantically creative, intelligent yet inconspicuous, and colorfully witchy.

Look Ingredients:

  • A pretty turquoise pleated skirt paired with a pink sweater and accented with a yellow camisole that combines colors in a way that feels wrong even though it’s perfectly right
  • Accessorize with items that represent her love for sewing and potion-making
  • A spooky black bag to hold her love for Jack
  • Tie it all together with a light blue scarf

Trending:

  • Curious color combinations
  • Lace-trimmed pieces (lingerie dressing)
  • Scarves

Finding harmony in contrasting colors brings this outfit together in a unique way.

The curious color combination trend combines hues that shouldn’t go together in ways that actually come together quite nicely. A lot like our curious couple in the Nightmare Before Christmas. Sally’s style is often harder to grasp, as her offbeat patchwork of colors makes it difficult to style.

For this look, I wanted to stay true to her femininity with a flowy skirt and soft pink sweater. The camisole adds just a bit more elegance to the ensemble. To tie it all together – somehow – I chose to stick with black booties and a black bag, as well as sterling silver jewelry. The blue scarf is a nod to her ragdoll complexion, and can be paired with a whimsical blue nail polish, if you wish.

Where to Shop (If You Need a Few Extras)

The whole point of this post is to encourage you to find pieces in your closet. Honestly, start there. You’d be so surprised at what a red scarf and a little eyeliner can do!

For me, I’ve always leaned goth in my outfit choices. Seriously, my whole closet is black with pops of purple and dark green, stripes, and Converse. So my favorite closet costumes often include Wednesday, Raven, and Elphaba. Oh, and Darth Vader. Always Vader.

But just in case you don’t have a closet full of your favorite anime characters or superheroes, here are some other places to find pieces for the low coins. And they don’t have to be trendy if what’s trending isn’t your personal style.

Thrift Stores. This is the second best place to find character-inspired pieces without spending much. Plus it’s a great way to experiment and see what you’re comfortable in and what you want more of.

Amazon. Another great place for basics like tights, accessories, sweaters, and even inexpensive jewelry. You can also find pieces from some of your favorite companies like Loungefly. Most of the pieces in the images above are from Amazon – it’s an everything everywhere all at once shopping experience. And, as usual, I’ve put everything you find here in a convenient shopping list so you can browse and order what you like!

Clothing Stores (Retail). While I’m not a huge fan of going out in public – it is sometimes the easiest way to find last-minute pieces. Stores like Torrid, Hot Topic, or your favorite place to purchase everyday clothes will have pieces that you can use to add a bit of fandom flair. And if trends are your jam, you’ll find them in retail stores.

Etsy. One of my favorite places to find subtle fandom jewelry and character-themed items that double as wearable art. This is the best place to find unique and handmade pieces created by artists who are fans like us. Keep in mind, however, that this is not the place to go for last-minute items, as pieces are often made-to-order and take more time to get to you.

Wrap-Up: This Is Your Sign to Dress Like Your Favorite Character

This Halloween, you don’t need to go all out to make a statement. Just wear what makes you feel good — and let your fandom shine through your fashion. And then keep wearing your favorite pieces even after Halloween is over. Because these aren’t technically costumes, after all. And that’s the best part!

Whether you’re pulling Hermione vibes from a cozy plaid coat or summoning Morticia energy in a long black slip dress, just remember:

Fandom is a lifestyle. You don’t have to cosplay to live your geek. You just have to show up as yourself with a little creative flair.

So what’s your Halloween vibe this year? Are you going full glam, subtle-spooky, or cozy wizardcore?
